Rooted in Africa

Morama’s cultivation facility spans over 45 hectares, nestled in the stunning Maloti Mountains of Lesotho, a country enclaved by South Africa. Lesotho wasn’t merely chosen for its convenient location, it is an acknowledgement of the region’s exceptional cannabis-growing potential. It is said that if you throw seeds on the pavement in Lesotho, plants will grow out of the cracks. As a result, Morama is taking things back to basics, growing the medical cannabis the world has been waiting for, as nature intended.

Morama’s approach is a refreshing mixture of passion, innovation and dedication. “We’ve designed our facility around a core of three fundamental principles: organic, regenerative farming techniques; local community engagement and enrichment; and sustainability.” Says Morama Group CEO, Scott Henson.

And it is with this sustainability and community-centric approach, that Morama embraces and celebrates its deeply rooted Africanness. The operation itself is built on a profound respect for cultural context and local traditions, and is as committed to quality production as it is to providing meaningful enrichment in the lives of all who contribute to its growth.

Enter the Kingdom of Lesotho

What makes Lesotho unique? Africa, specifically Lesotho, is expected to dominate the global medical cannabis market due to its favourable agricultural conditions and exceptional, local expertise. Lesotho was the first African country to issue licences that allow for full-scale cultivation, distribution, export, import and R&D of all cannabinoid species. Lesotho has also received the highest INCB quota for the export of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in Africa.

Morama Holdings is a subsidiary of Agriobiomed Global Ltd (AGL) and is licensed to cultivate cannabis in Lesotho. We are a Lesotho registered company, holding a full cannabinoid and hemp cultivation, manufacturing and exporting sales licence – (granted in terms of section 12 of the Drugs Act, 2008.) Morama is the registered owner of 45 hectrares of pristine agricultural land which is situated in the picturesque Berea Valley in the Maluti foothills in Lesotho, located approximately 30 minutes from the capital, Maseru, and 45 minutes from the international airport.

Nurturing by nature

With no shortage of sunlight, fresh air, sloping altitudes, and high-quality, natural water sources, Lesotho provides an optimal environment for cultivating exemplary medical cannabis. An uncommon method in global cannabis farming, Morama embraces (living) soil-enriching, water-saving, and no-till farming practices, resulting in a 100% natural and organic process. And in working with the natural world and its seasons, the focus at Morama is on harnessing one main growth cycle per year–which means plenty of hard work and dedication goes into making the most of it.

Cultivating community

Over 50 people from the local community are employed full time by Morama, which is also 20% owned by local partners. As well as the district council and its stakeholders, we have built strong relationships with the local community and traditional leaders.

A number of skills transfer programmes have already been implemented at Morama for the community employees, and this will continue to be developed further until the workforce is sufficiently upskilled to conduct operations independently.

Planting with purpose

Ensuring the use of all natural, ecologically responsible farming practices is only one part of how Morama honours the spectacular terroir of Lesotho. It is also about tapping into the unique contribution that planting medical cannabis will make to the lives of those who touch it. In Lesotho, more than half the population lives below the poverty line, despite its vast agricultural and grazing land.

Grown for the sole purpose of ultimately healing and improving quality of life, our magnificent plants are the perfect embodiment of our commitment to caring for the people, land and consumers of this powerful product. It is Morama’s sincere intention to not only have a positive impact on those directly involved, but also to uplift the broader local economy, unlock latent potential in the region, and set an example for responsible and progressive development practices in the future.

Cannabis for change

Morama Holdings isn’t just cultivating cannabis; we are cultivating change – a paradigm shift in the cannabis industry, where sustainability, community enrichment, and organic farming converge. Their story isn’t just about cannabis; it’s about redefining what responsible cultivation and community engagement mean in a rapidly evolving industry.

As we continue our journey, Morama stands as a testament to the transformative power of harmonising nature, technology, and community for a brighter, sustainable future in cannabis cultivation.
